Japan’s Oji Group has broken ground on a US$110 million aseptic carton packaging plant in Đồng Nai, Vietnam, with production expected to start in 2028. The company announced the project on 12 October, following a groundbreaking ceremony on 10 October.

The 57,000-square-metre facility at Long Thanh High-tech Industrial Park will operate as Oji Liquid Pak (OLP). It is designed to produce up to eight billion packs annually, supplying beverage and liquid-food manufacturers in Asia-Pacific and potentially other markets.

For food and grocery suppliers, the project adds planned regional capacity in a packaging category used for products such as shelf-stable milk, juice and other liquid foods. Aseptic cartons allow products processed and filled under controlled conditions to be distributed without refrigeration before opening, depending on the product and packaging system.

Oji’s plant is not yet operational. Its eight-billion-pack figure is a designed maximum, not current output, and the company has not announced customer contracts or confirmed how quickly the site will reach capacity.

The Vietnam project forms part of the group’s broader expansion in liquid-food packaging. In 2023, Oji acquired Italian aseptic packaging specialist IPI. OLP was established in 2025 as IPI’s sister business to develop the Asia-Pacific market. IPI operates converting capacity in Italy and supplies packaging materials, filling equipment and technical services.

The new facility could give food and beverage producers another regional sourcing option, but buyers will need more than headline capacity when assessing it. Qualification of carton materials, compatibility with filling lines, technical support, production consistency and delivery lead times all affect packaging procurement.

Regional supply could also matter to supermarket private-label businesses whose manufacturers require secure access to compliant, food-contact packaging. Shorter supply routes may offer operational advantages for some customers, although the company has not quantified cost or emissions savings for the new plant.

Oji says the investment strengthens Vietnam’s role as a manufacturing and supply hub for its Southeast Asian business. Local coverage reported the 10 October groundbreaking, while the company-issued international announcement followed on 12 October.

The next milestones are construction, equipment installation and commissioning ahead of the planned 2028 opening. GTN’s overview of packaging companies in Asia provides further context on the region’s packaging suppliers.
