Mondi has announced further price increases for several paper grades as energy costs rise, with the financial benefit expected late in 2026 and into 2027. The packaging supplier disclosed the increases in its 15 October trading update.
The announcement puts paper-based grocery packaging budgets under renewed scrutiny, although it gives no percentage increase or uniform implementation date for customers.
Mondi said higher containerboard prices offset input inflation, but its corrugated converting business remained squeezed by competition and delays in passing paper costs through. Kraft paper and paper bags also recorded positive pricing.
For procurement teams, the distinction between paper and a finished pack is central. A rise in a paper grade does not establish an identical increase in every box, bag or retail-ready format.
As one of the major packaging suppliers serving the UK market, Mondi’s update gives buyers a reason to revisit quotations. The practical questions are which specifications are affected, when existing agreements reset and whether any proposed surcharge overlaps with an index-linked adjustment already in the contract.
Third-quarter underlying EBITDA was €196 million, against €167 million in the previous quarter. That apparent improvement includes the disappearance of a €43 million forestry fair-value loss. Excluding forestry movements, the second-quarter comparison is €210 million, making the latest result roughly 6.7% lower. Planned maintenance was the main sequential drag.
The calculation helps explain why the headline earnings rise should not be read as evidence that cost pressure has eased. Buyers negotiating with converters need a clear breakdown of material, energy, freight and processing charges rather than relying on a group profit figure.
Across Europe’s paper and fibre packaging suppliers, like-for-like tender comparisons should hold pack performance constant. A cheaper quotation is less useful if it requires different board strength, packing-line settings or pallet arrangements. Those changes need testing before savings are included in a purchasing budget.
Mondi is transferring volumes from converting plants due to close this year. It also sold one solid-board converting plant at the end of September and agreed to sell another.
Customers affected by a production transfer should confirm the receiving site, qualification timetable and contingency stock arrangements. The update does not establish a supply shortage, but it makes continuity checks relevant alongside price negotiations.
For private-label manufacturers, packaging discussions and retailer pricing reviews may run on different timetables. Recording the effective date and scope of each supplier change can help commercial teams explain the actual exposure without applying a blanket uplift across unrelated products.
The next test will be how the announced paper increases feed through into individual contracts as 2027 purchasing plans take shape. Buyers will need written, specification-level terms to turn Mondi’s broad cost warning into a reliable budget.
