Ahold Delhaize has marked its 10th anniversary by sounding the opening gong at Euronext Amsterdam, celebrating a decade of growth that has seen the international food retailer expand from serving around 50 million customers each week to 77 million today.
The milestone comes ten years after Ahold and Delhaize Group announced plans to merge in June 2015. The combined company officially launched in 2016, bringing together two established supermarket businesses with a shared focus on local brands, food retail and customer service.
Today, Ahold Delhaize operates a portfolio of 17 local brands across Europe, the United States and Indonesia. The group employs approximately 384,000 associates, serves 77 million customers every week, and operates more than 9,500 supermarkets, convenience stores and specialty stores. It also holds a number one or number two market position in each of the countries where it operates.
Over the past decade, the retailer has navigated significant industry challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, inflationary pressures and changing consumer shopping habits. During this period, the company continued investing in digital capabilities, omnichannel retail and sustainability while supporting local communities through its network of supermarket brands.
For global supermarkets, Ahold Delhaize’s growth highlights the increasing importance of combining strong local retail brands with shared international capabilities. The group’s scale has enabled it to expand digital services, strengthen supply chain operations and develop high-quality own-brand products while allowing individual supermarket brands to remain focused on local customer needs.
Looking ahead, Ahold Delhaize said food retail will continue to evolve through greater use of technology, personalised shopping experiences, omnichannel services and increasing demand for affordable, healthier and more sustainable food. The company’s Growing Together strategy, launched in 2025, is designed to support these priorities over the coming years.
The retailer said its combination of local supermarket brands, digital capabilities, innovation and private label development positions the business for continued growth as consumer expectations and the grocery retail market continue to evolve.
