Packaging manufacturer Silgan reported third-quarter net sales of $2.04 billion and raised the midpoint of its full-year adjusted earnings outlook, as demand across its food packaging businesses remained uneven.

The Connecticut-based group published its results on 29 October 2026. Net sales increased from $2.01 billion a year earlier, while reported net income fell to $105 million from $113.3 million. Adjusted diluted earnings per share reached $1.31.

Silgan supplies metal food containers, dispensing systems and specialist closures for food, beverage, healthcare and consumer goods companies. Its results therefore provide a direct view of packaging demand across several supermarket supplier categories.

The group reported lower volumes in metal containers, including pressure in soup packaging. Demand was more resilient in selected fruit, vegetable and pet-food categories. For buyers, this shows why the overall packaging revenue figure cannot be treated as a single measure of demand for canned food.

Food manufacturers choose packaging according to shelf life, product protection, cost, filling-line requirements and retailer expectations. A change in demand for one product group can affect container orders even when broader grocery sales remain stable.

Silgan also highlighted growth in dispensing products serving pharmaceutical customers and in fragrance packaging. Those businesses contribute to group performance but do not directly indicate trends in supermarket food consumption.

The company has announced an agreement to acquire Trivium Packaging. That proposed transaction would alter Silgan’s position in metal packaging, subject to the relevant completion conditions. GTN previously reported the Trivium transaction, giving this quarterly update added relevance for food and beverage suppliers.

For FMCG procurement teams, the key questions are whether supplier consolidation changes capacity, innovation options or contract terms. None of those outcomes should be assumed before a transaction closes or a supplier confirms operational plans.

GTN has also examined the packaging market in its Netherlands packaging industry guide.

Silgan expects earnings and free-cash-flow improvement in 2027. Its coming reports will show whether the recovery extends to food-container volumes as well as higher-margin dispensing products.
