Sainsburys opens new flagship store in Wynyard Retail Park

Sainsburys opens new flagship store

The new Sainsburys Wynyard supermarket will open at 09:00 on Thursday 13 November in the newly constructed Wynyard Retail Park, bringing a full fresh-food offer and an in-store Argos to a fast-growing area of County Durham.

The 29,000 sq ft supermarket will trade from 07:00–22:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:00–16:00 on Sundays.
More than 110 people have joined the store’s opening team, supporting both retail operations and the new Argos unit inside the supermarket.

Shoppers will find Sainsbury’s latest food layout, including fresh fruit and veg, a full bakery offer, frozen foods, everyday grocery essentials and a food-to-go section.
The store will stock hundreds of new lines added over the past year as Sainsbury’s refreshes its food ranges.

Customers can use Nectar to access personalised prices and weekly savings.
Shoppers who are not yet signed up can join digitally, giving them access to the retailer’s strongest value platform.

The in-store Argos will allow customers to order online and collect thousands of products while completing their grocery shopping.
The unit also supports pick-up for Habitat and Tu Clothing orders, giving Wynyard a wider non-food offer in one stop.

The existing Billingham Argos will continue to operate normally after the Wynyard opening.
This new site is part of Sainsbury’s largest store-expansion programme in more than ten years as the retailer increases its presence across the UK ahead of Christmas.

Around 300 parking spaces are available for customers, including Blue Badge bays and parent-and-child spaces.
The store will also take part in Sainsbury’s community programmes, including Nourish the Nation, which aims to improve access to balanced and sustainable food across the UK.

The development forms part of wider growth within Wynyard Retail Park and links to the Tees Valley Strategic Economic Plan by supporting employment and long-term retail investment.

Why It Matters

The Sainsbury’s Wynyard supermarket gives the retailer a strategic new location in a growing area that previously lacked a full-range store of this scale.
It strengthens Sainsbury’s position in the North East at a time when major UK grocers are expanding formats and improving local coverage.

The addition of an in-store Argos helps Sainsbury’s push its multi-brand strategy.
It lifts click-and-collect capacity and makes it easier for shoppers to combine non-food pick-ups with their weekly shop.
This is a key part of how Sainsbury’s is using its estate to reduce delivery costs and increase convenience for customers.

Nectar integration remains central to the retailer’s value approach.
The Wynyard opening gives more households access to personalised pricing and exclusive deals at a time when customers are looking for stronger daily savings.

From a regional perspective, more than 110 new jobs is a meaningful addition for Wynyard and the surrounding area.
It also supports long-term development plans in the Tees Valley, where new retail sites are expected to drive footfall and spending.

For Sainsbury’s, the new supermarket fits into its wider expansion programme — the largest in over a decade — and reflects ongoing demand for full-range stores with strong grocery, non-food and digital service in one location.
