Ahold Delhaize has confirmed that its Belgian banner Delhaize Belgium has completed the acquisition of Delfood, adding 303 stores to its national retail network.
The transaction includes all louis delhaize stores and Delfood-supplied outlets, as well as logistics operations and the Belgian headquarters. The deal has received approval from the Belgian Competition Authority, subject to conditions requiring the divestment of six Delfood proximity stores and one Delhaize Shop & Go location.
With the integration completed, Delhaize now operates 1,109 stores across Belgium and Luxembourg, significantly increasing its footprint in neighborhood and convenience formats.
The acquisition strengthens Delhaize’s presence in high-frequency shopping locations, where demand continues to grow for quick-access food retail and local convenience shopping.
By absorbing Delfood’s store estate and logistics capabilities, Delhaize gains improved distribution reach and operational scale. This also increases network density in urban and suburban catchment areas, improving store coverage and proximity access.
The move reinforces Delhaize’s competitive position within the Belgium supermarket market, where retailers are expanding smaller formats to respond to changing shopping habits and rising convenience demand.
Delhaize already operates one of the country’s most diverse retail portfolios, covering large supermarkets, urban convenience stores and Shop & Go locations. The additional 303 stores further strengthen this multi-format strategy.
