Asda has appointed Jon Downes as Vice President – Ambient, strengthening its UK commercial leadership team as the retailer continues to refine its grocery category structure.
He will join in June 2026 and report to Chief Commercial Officer Darren Blackhurst, according to the company announcement on 21 April 2026.
Downes brings broad UK grocery experience, having worked at Tesco, Morrisons and most recently at M&S, where he served as Food Commercial Operations Director since 2024.
In his new role at Asda, he will oversee the ambient category, focusing on commercial performance, supplier collaboration and value delivery across core grocery lines such as packaged food, household staples and long-life products.
The move comes as UK supermarkets continue to strengthen category leadership teams to manage pricing pressure, supplier negotiations and shifting customer demand in core food aisles.
Darren Blackhurst, Chief Commercial Officer at Asda, said Jon Downes brings strong commercial experience and a track record of delivering outcomes for customers, colleagues and suppliers, adding that he looks forward to working with him on strengthening the retailer’s proposition.
The appointment reflects ongoing competition among UK grocers to secure experienced commercial leaders from rivals such as Tesco, Morrisons and M&S, particularly in key categories like ambient grocery, which remain central to margin performance.
Asda has been actively reshaping parts of its operations in recent months, including supply chain and store-level initiatives aimed at improving efficiency and customer value positioning.
What happens next will be closely watched across the UK grocery sector as leadership changes continue to shape buying strategies ahead of peak trading periods.
