Choosing food packaging companies in Czechia starts with the product and the filling line. A dairy tub, a confectionery carton and a glass jar may sit beside one another in a supermarket, but they require different suppliers, tooling and transport arrangements. A useful shortlist therefore needs more than five familiar packaging names.
This guide compares Greiner Packaging Slušovice, Fatra, Model Obaly, Mondi Bupak and Vetropack Moravia Glass. Each has a Czech manufacturing presence and a different role in grocery packaging. The selection covers primary packs that hold food and secondary packaging that protects, transports or displays it.
“Top five” describes an editorial sourcing shortlist, not a ranking by Czech market share. Comparable local market-share figures were not established. Company facts were checked against manufacturer publications in September 2026; undated site-profile figures are identified as such. Capacity is not the same as actual annual output.
Which Czech packaging company fits your product?
| Company | Czech operation | Relevant formats | Best starting question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greiner Packaging | Slušovice | Rigid plastic food packs, including dairy cups and lids | Can the pack and closure run reliably on our existing filling line? |
| Fatra | Napajedla and Chropyně | Thermoformed packs, polyester films and laminates | Which material structure suits the food, temperature and sealing process? |
| Model Obaly | Multiple Czech locations, including Opava and Hostinné | Corrugated packaging, folding cartons and retail displays | Which plant will make the pack and validate the finished specification? |
| Mondi Bupak | České Budějovice | Corrugated boxes, die-cut packs and displays | What board and case design will survive our actual distribution route? |
| Vetropack Moravia Glass | Kyjov | Glass containers for food and beverages | Is an existing jar or bottle suitable, or does the project need a new mould? |
For a retailer launching an own-brand range, the food manufacturer may buy the packaging on the retailer’s behalf. Establish that responsibility before approaching suppliers. Otherwise, the retailer, co-packer and packaging converter can end up negotiating different versions of the same specification.
1. Greiner Packaging Slušovice: rigid packs for chilled grocery products
Greiner lists greiner packaging slušovice s.r.o. at Greinerova 54 in Slušovice. Its wider portfolio includes cups, tubs, bottles and buckets. The group’s website also lists an Assistec operation in Březová; buyers should not count that automatically as a second Czech food-packaging factory.
A useful Czech reference is Greiner’s published work for Mlékárna Hlinsko’s Tatra quark products. The manufacturer describes a polypropylene cup-and-lid solution for 500 g and 1 kg packs, used since 2024. The closure combines sealing and reclosing functions, replacing a separate foil-and-lid arrangement.
That example makes Greiner worth investigating when the buying brief concerns the interaction between a dairy product, its opening experience and its filling process. It does not establish that the same closure will suit another recipe or production line. A change that removes one component can still require different tooling, handling or sealing settings.
What to ask in a quotation: specify the product’s filling temperature, fat content, target shelf life, pack dimensions and current line speed. Request samples of both the container and closure, then agree how seal integrity and opening force will be tested. Include stacking, denesting and pallet quantities in the commercial comparison.
For supermarket teams, reclosure can be a meaningful consumer benefit in larger dairy packs. The commercial question is whether that benefit supports the product’s price position after the full cost of the pack, production change and transport has been calculated. Avoid treating a change of material or a reduction in components as proof of recyclability in every destination market.
2. Fatra: films, laminates and thermoformed food packs
Fatra traces its history to 1935 and identifies two manufacturing locations, Napajedla and Chropyně. Its corporate profile reports exports to more than 60 countries. Those facts describe the wider plastics business, rather than a dedicated food-packaging division.
The company’s thermoformed range includes cups, trays and lids for applications such as delicatessen products, confectionery and frozen foods. Its product page describes unplasticised PVC formats and applications down to −18°C. That temperature statement should not be extended into a claim that the same pack is suitable for hot filling, microwaving or oven use.
Fatra also supplies TENOLAN biaxially oriented polyester films and FOLAM laminates. The published range includes food-contact variants and laminate structures combining polyester with polyethylene or polypropylene, with options such as printing and anti-fog treatment.
The distinction matters when placing an enquiry. A roll of film for conversion, a lidding laminate and a finished tray are different purchases. A brand owner should make clear whether it needs a ready-to-use pack or a material that another converter will print, laminate or form.
What to ask in a quotation: identify the complete pack structure and the business responsible for each conversion stage. Send the intended food, storage conditions, sealing equipment and expected distribution period. Ask for evidence specific to that construction and use, rather than accepting a broad statement about the supplier’s entire catalogue.
For chilled produce or prepared foods, a trial should examine visibility, condensation, opening and seal consistency alongside product condition. If a retailer has a preferred material policy, include it at the start. Replacing an unsuitable structure after artwork and machinery trials have been approved can turn a modest packaging project into an expensive delay.
3. Model Obaly: cartons, corrugated cases and shelf presentation
Model Group was founded in 1882 and remains a Swiss family business. Its company profile reports consolidated sales of CHF936 million and an average workforce of 4,344 for 2025. These are group figures, not Model Obaly’s Czech revenue or employee count.
The Czech network brings together different capabilities. Model’s locations information says Opava joined the group in 1992 and now serves as its Czech headquarters, with corrugated and folding-carton operations. Nymburk was built in 1995. Hostinné joined in 2003 and makes printed folding cartons; its undated profile lists approximately 280 employees and annual capacity of 15,000 tonnes.
Model’s food-packaging offering includes corrugated trays, solid-board packaging, shelf-ready packs and displays. This breadth is useful for projects that must coordinate the individual selling unit with the outer case and its presentation in store.
However, a group-wide product catalogue is not a promise that every Czech plant makes every format. The request for quotation should identify the proposed production location, printing process and subcontracted steps. This also makes later approval of a factory change easier to control.
What to ask in a quotation: provide the shelf dimensions, number of units per case, replenishment method and retailer’s artwork requirements. Ask for a physical mock-up with the actual product inside. Check whether staff can open the case cleanly and whether the display remains stable as customers remove units.
A beautifully printed carton can still create trouble if the dimensions reduce pallet efficiency or the tear strip damages the selling pack. Evaluate the carton, case and pallet together. For premium confectionery, establish whether decorative features affect packing speed, scuff resistance or the practicality of separating materials after use.
4. Mondi Bupak: corrugated protection and distribution packaging
Mondi Bupak operates at Papírenská 41 in České Budějovice. Its official location profile describes integrated corrugated-board production and conversion, with approximately 220 employees. The profile is undated, so that workforce figure should be treated as a company-published indication of site scale.
The plant lists boxes, die-cut packaging, displays and high-quality flexographic printing, alongside tear and reinforcement tapes. It also highlights e-commerce work and delivery or consignment-stock arrangements. The location page records a 2025 WorldStar award in the food category for its Eco-Cage design.
For grocery buyers, Bupak belongs primarily in a conversation about outer packaging, product protection and handling. Do not assume that every food-contact material sold elsewhere in Mondi’s global portfolio is manufactured at this site.
What to ask in a quotation: share the filled case weight, pallet pattern, maximum stack height and route to market. Explain whether goods move through a retailer’s distribution centre, through parcel delivery, or through both. A box that performs adequately on a stable pallet may behave differently as an individual e-commerce shipment.
Include the packing operation in the trial. If a design takes longer to assemble, requires extra tape or frustrates automated equipment, the lower material price may not produce a lower delivered cost. Agree who will investigate damage claims and how retained samples and batch identification will support that process.
Stock arrangements also deserve a separate commercial discussion. Define the ownership of stored packaging, minimum call-off quantities, lead times and liability for obsolete printed stock. These details become especially important when a seasonal supermarket promotion has a fixed end date.
5. Vetropack Moravia Glass: jars and bottles from Kyjov
The Kyjov glassworks dates to 1883 and became part of Vetropack in 1991. Vetropack’s location profile lists 496 employees, two furnaces and seven production lines, with capacity exceeding 670 tonnes per day. These are undated site-profile figures, not verified current output or a Czech market-share calculation.
Vetropack’s wider food portfolio includes containers for preserves, dairy products, sauces, oils and other food categories. For a Czech sourcing project, buyers need confirmation of which reference will be produced at Kyjov and which may come from another group plant.
What to ask in a quotation: begin with the fill volume, container finish, closure specification and processing conditions. Ask whether a catalogue container can meet the brief before commissioning a proprietary shape. New moulds add commercial and technical decisions that are unnecessary if an existing container provides the required shelf appearance and performance.
A glass tender also needs a closure plan. The jar, cap, liner and filling process must work as one system, even if different suppliers provide them. Establish responsibility for dimensional compatibility, sealing trials and any subsequent change to the components.
Glass weight, pallet loading and breakage exposure can materially affect delivered cost. Request comparable quotations on the same delivery basis and calculate the cost per saleable filled unit. A distinctive shape may support a premium product, but that benefit should be weighed against line handling, storage and transport requirements.
How to compare quotations without hiding the real cost
| Cost or risk | Include in the comparison | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Tooling and origination | Moulds, cutting tools, print plates, ownership and replacement | A cheap unit price can depend on a large upfront commitment |
| Production performance | Trial waste, line speed, changeover time and rejected packs | The packing line determines usable output |
| Logistics | Units per pallet, freight, storage and call-off terms | Bulky packaging can make delivery a significant part of cost |
| Artwork and variants | Minimum run by design, mixed orders and revision charges | A range with many slow-selling variants can accumulate stock |
| Quality evidence | Relevant specifications, test reports and site documentation | Evidence must match the pack being purchased |
| Obsolescence | Unused printed stock and responsibility after a range change | A delisted product can leave a packaging liability |
Use a single written brief across the shortlist. Give each supplier the same forecast, launch date, delivery point and specification assumptions. Separate an initial trial quantity from the expected annual volume, and make clear whether forecasts represent a firm commitment.
Request an escalation contact and a documented change-notification process. Changes in material, manufacturing location or a key component should reach the buyer before they appear in a delivery. For repeat orders, retain an approved reference sample and the version of the specification attached to the contract.
Frequently asked questions
Which supplier should a small food brand approach first?
Start with the required format and ask about standard products, minimum quantities and distribution partners. A large manufacturer may be suitable through a stock range or intermediary, while a custom design may require volumes beyond the launch forecast. Obtain a specific offer rather than assuming that company size determines accessibility.
Can one supplier provide all the packaging for a supermarket range?
Possibly for a narrow product family, but a range spanning chilled dairy, sauces and dry foods may need several material specialists. The more useful objective is coordinated specifications and clear responsibility between the retailer, food manufacturer and packaging suppliers.
Are employee numbers a reliable way to rank packaging suppliers?
No. Automation, product mix and reporting boundaries differ. Local factory data can help explain scale, but it cannot establish available capacity, quality performance or market share. Assess the plant and process proposed for the order.
Building a Czech grocery sourcing shortlist
Begin with the pack format, then move to trials and comparable commercial terms. Greiner is relevant to rigid food packs; Fatra to films, laminates and thermoformed formats; Model to cartons and retail presentation; Mondi Bupak to corrugated distribution packaging; and Vetropack Moravia Glass to glass containers.
