Carrefour enters Ethiopia through franchise partnership

The French supermarket group Carrefour has confirmed its entry into Ethiopia through a franchise and supply partnership with Midroc Investment Group.

The agreement, announced on January 5, 2026, will see the company  roll out its banners, retail expertise, and product ranges across an existing supermarket network operated by Queens Supermarket PLC, a subsidiary of Midroc.

Under the partnership, Carrefour will support the full transformation of the current store network under that company’s branding. The first stores are expected to be rebranded in the first half of 2026.

The initial rollout covers 13 existing stores. Beyond that, the partners have outlined an expansion plan that targets the opening of 17 additional new-branded stores by 2028.

The Ethiopia move forms part of Carrefour’s wider international franchise strategy. The group has accelerated franchise-led expansion in recent years and passed the milestone of 3,000 franchised stores globally in October 2025.

Patrick Lasfargues, CEO of Carrefour International Partnership, said the Ethiopia launch reflects the strength of company franchise model and its focus on partnering with established local operators in growth markets.

From Midroc’s side, the group said the partnership combines Carrefour’s international retail systems with deep local market knowledge. The aim is to offer Ethiopian consumers affordable products and a modern supermarket experience adapted to local expectations.

Ethiopia is one of Africa’s largest consumer markets, with a young population and rapid urbanization supporting rising demand for organized retail. International supermarket operators have so far had limited direct presence in the country, making franchise entry a significant step for the local grocery sector.

The first Carrefour-branded stores are expected to open to shoppers in 2026, with further expansion phases planned through 2028.
