Belgium supermarket chain Colruyt Group has equipped its 100th store with its AI-powered “easy checkout” system, marking a major step in a nationwide rollout.
The milestone store is located in Sint-Niklaas.
Colruyt confirmed that all 273 Colruyt stores will be equipped with the system during 2026.
The project began with a pilot in Halle in February 2023. After testing, the retailer decided in spring 2025 to proceed with a full rollout. Less than a year later, 100 stores are already operating with the technology.
The “easy checkout” system uses a camera installed above the checkout counter. The camera, powered by artificial intelligence, recognises products as employees transfer items from one cart to another using Colruyt’s caddy-to-caddy model.
According to the company, the system can recognise up to 85% of products automatically, while fresh produce and items at the bottom of carts are still scanned manually.
Colruyt says the system can speed up scanning by around 20%, while allowing employees to work with both hands free. The retailer also states that the new setup reduces required checkout hours and gives staff more time for other tasks in the store.
The technology was developed internally by Colruyt Group’s Industrial Automation team.
Rollout is being handled region by region to allow time for staff training and adaptation.
The system has already received external recognition. In 2024, “easy checkout” won the RETA Award in the Best AI & Robotics Application category. In 2026, it received a silver medal at the Henry van de Velde Awards in the Business Innovation category.
The full network rollout is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year.
