Kirin Brewery Company is repositioning its alcohol-free beer segment with a renewed version of Greens Free, backed by a new national TV campaign launched on April 6.
The update focuses on taste and positioning. The company says it has improved body and hop aroma while keeping the product at 0.00% alcohol, as it looks to move the category beyond its traditional role as a substitute for alcoholic drinks.
The relaunch comes as demand in Japan continues to evolve, with more consumers choosing non-alcoholic options for refreshment rather than restriction. Kirin is aiming to capture that shift by presenting Greens Free as an everyday beverage choice.
The product has been reformulated using beer-making techniques to enhance flavour depth, with three types of hops used to strengthen aroma and balance. The company also confirmed no sweeteners are used, aligning with cleaner-label preferences seen across the beverage sector.
Packaging has also been updated to create a brighter, more lifestyle-led image, supporting the broader repositioning of the brand.
Alongside the product changes, Kirin has rolled out a new advertising campaign featuring actress Alice Hirose. While the campaign is consumer-facing, it reflects a wider strategy to normalise alcohol-free drinks in more casual, daily settings.
This shift is becoming more visible across the Japan FMCG market, where beverage groups are increasingly investing in low- and no-alcohol categories as part of long-term portfolio diversification.
Why it matters
The update signals a clear change in how non-alcoholic beer is being marketed in Japan. For retailers and suppliers, the focus is moving away from “replacement” drinking occasions towards broader consumption moments such as relaxation and refreshment.
That repositioning could help expand shelf space and frequency of purchase, particularly among younger and health-conscious consumers.
