UK-based semiconductor company Pragmatic Semiconductor has launched a new NFC-enabled tamper detection chip designed to help brands and retailers combat product counterfeiting, prevent tampering and improve supply chain transparency.
The new product, called Pragmatic NFC Protect PR1311, combines product authentication, digital identity and tamper evidence in a flexible, ultra-thin chip that can be integrated into packaging and labels. Consumers can verify whether a product is genuine and unopened simply by tapping it with a smartphone.
The company said the technology is intended for use across sectors where product integrity and consumer safety are critical, including baby food, pet food, pharmaceuticals, wellness products, cosmetics, wine and spirits.
Counterfeit goods remain a growing concern for brands and retailers worldwide. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), counterfeit products accounted for an estimated US$467 billion in global trade in 2021, creating significant risks for consumers and supply chains.
Pragmatic said NFC Protect creates a unique digital identity for each item through a serial number programmed during manufacturing. The chip also records tamper status, enabling brands, retailers and consumers to verify whether a product has been opened or compromised.
The company said the technology could also help reduce grey market activity by improving product traceability and allowing products to be authenticated throughout their lifecycle.
Beyond authentication, the chip can support digital engagement between brands and consumers. Companies can use the technology to provide product information, gather feedback and create ongoing interactions after purchase.
The launch has attracted support from several companies operating in packaging and digital identification, including strategic investors and partners such as Avery Dennison and Amcor, which see growing demand for intelligent packaging solutions that can strengthen product protection and consumer trust.
Pragmatic has also launched an early access programme that will allow customers to source the new chip through selected assembly partners.
Why this matters for supermarkets and consumer brands
As retailers and manufacturers face rising concerns around counterfeit goods, product diversion and food safety, smart packaging technologies are becoming increasingly important.
Item-level authentication and tamper detection could help supermarkets verify product integrity, protect private-label products and improve transparency across increasingly complex supply chains.
The technology may be particularly relevant for high-value and sensitive products, including infant nutrition, health and wellness products, premium foods and pet care items, where consumer trust is critical.
United Kingdom Packaging: Pragmatic Semiconductor’s new NFC technology highlights how smart packaging is evolving beyond traditional labels and seals to provide authentication, traceability and consumer engagement capabilities at the individual product level.
The company expects the new technology to support broader adoption of connected packaging solutions as brands seek cost-effective ways to protect products and strengthen trust with consumers.
