WPO Week 2025 Highlights Global Packaging Trends and Sustainability Goals

WPO Week 2025 Highlights Global Packaging

The World Packaging Organisation (WPO) has completed its 114th board meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The week-long event, held from October 27 to 31, brought together 34 international members to discuss the future of packaging, innovation, and sustainability.

Hosted by the Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging (SLIP), the program included high-level meetings, the Global Packaging Congress, and the Sri Lanka Packaging Awards ceremony. It reflected WPO’s global mission — “Better quality of life through better packaging for more people.”

WPO President Luciana Pellegrino stated that the Colombo meeting was a significant step in planning for 2026. “We are extremely honored and pleased to return to Sri Lanka for another Board Meeting,” she said. “This was also WPO’s final official event before our participation at COP30 in Brazil, where we will discuss the role of packaging in reducing food loss and waste.”

The event also marked 50 years of the Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging. SLIP President Thusith Wijesinghe said this anniversary made the occasion even more special. “The knowledge gained from these events will help to drive the local industry forward,” he said.

Delegates from many countries joined working groups and discussions about packaging design, circular economy goals, and food system sustainability. The meeting also provided a platform for members to share ideas on reducing waste, improving material efficiency, and promoting better recycling systems.

WPO continues to act as a bridge between packaging professionals, education centers, and businesses across 60 countries. The organization works with local and global partners to raise standards, train professionals, and promote packaging that supports a healthier planet.

The Colombo gathering showed that the packaging industry is moving beyond traditional materials and methods. The focus is now on innovation that connects environmental goals with consumer needs.

As the WPO prepares for its presentation at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, the organization aims to highlight packaging’s central role in cutting food waste and improving supply chains around the world.
