Asda Reports Strong Progress in 2024 ESG Update

Asda ESG 2024 Update Shows Strong Progress

Asda has released its fifth Environmental, Social and Governance Report, outlining the UK retailer’s operational and sustainability progress for 2024. The Asda ESG 2024 Update highlights reductions in carbon, packaging improvements and new milestones across fresh produce and waste management.

Asda reduced its scope 1 and 2 operational carbon emissions by 12% last year. The retailer has now cut its carbon footprint by 48% since 2021, putting it close to its 50% reduction target for 2025. Two new Bio-LNG refuelling sites, opened in 2024, played a key role in lowering emissions across the transport network.

Across fresh produce, Asda achieved full Leaf Marque certification for all UK growers. More than 500 farms now meet the standard, supporting better water use, soil management and biodiversity outcomes across the supply chain.

The Asda ESG 2024 Update also details several packaging changes. The retailer increased recyclability across own-brand packaging to 97.5%. A new vacuum format for Just Essentials fresh beef mince cut packaging volumes by 60%, removing 43 tonnes of plastic. Asda also reduced the weight of its Prosecco bottles by 4.8%, taking 26.5 tonnes of glass out of the system.

Another change saw Asda move its laundry capsules from plastic tubs to cardboard boxes. This shift removes 105 trucks from UK roads each year through improved transport efficiency.

In waste management, Asda reused, recycled or redistributed 87.7% of its operational waste in 2024. The retailer continues to target 90% by the end of 2025. As part of circular-economy testing, Asda also began selling refurbished TVs in a UK supermarket first.

The Asda ESG 2024 Update reflects a wider push to scale low-carbon logistics, improve packaging sustainability and tighten fresh-produce compliance. These changes are shaping supplier expectations across meat, beverages, household categories and fresh produce throughout 2025.

The update comes after Asda’s £568m business sale, completed earlier this year as part of the retailer’s wider corporate activity.
