Metsä Board completes Winschoten acquisition

Metsä Board has completed the acquisition of the Winschoten Sheeting and Distribution Hub in the Netherlands from Konvertia Group, strengthening its converting and logistics footprint in Europe.

The transaction was first announced on 23 January 2026. The purchase price has not been disclosed.

The Winschoten facility is one of Europe’s largest dedicated sheeting and distribution hubs. It has an annual capacity of approximately 100,000 tonnes and employs 22 people.

Sheeting operations sit between board production and packaging conversion. They allow large reels of cartonboard to be cut into precise sheet formats required by converters serving food, FMCG and retail customers. Capacity at this stage of the value chain directly affects lead times, flexibility and service reliability.

With the acquisition now completed, Metsä Board will integrate Winschoten into its European operating structure. Production planning, logistics coordination and customer service systems will be aligned with the company’s broader regional network.

The deal expands Metsä Board’s physical presence in continental Europe at a time when packaging supply chains remain focused on shorter delivery routes and improved responsiveness.

Metsä Board produces lightweight folding boxboards, foodservice boards and white kraftliners used widely in food and consumer goods packaging. In 2025, the company reported sales of EUR 1.8 billion and employed around 2,000 people.

The company is part of Metsä Group, whose total sales reached EUR 5.8 billion in 2025.

Europe remains a core growth market for cartonboard, driven by food packaging demand and private label development. The addition of the Winschoten hub increases Metsä Board’s regional converting capacity and strengthens its service infrastructure within that market.

Metsä Board is one of Finland leading packaging exporters. The completion of the Winschoten acquisition reflects continued outward investment by Finland packaging companies into European distribution and converting assets.
