Lidl has highlighted new independent product test results in Germany after several own-brand products received strong ratings from consumer publication ÖKO-TEST.

According to the May 2026 issue of ÖKO-TEST, Lidl’s “Freshona Organic Buttered Vegetables” and “Freshona Buttered Vegetables” both received the top overall rating of “Very Good”.

The retailer said the organic frozen vegetable product was recognised for its ingredients while also ranking among the lower-priced organic products included in the comparison.

The “Freshona Buttered Vegetables” product also received a “Very Good” rating. Lidl positioned the product as a low-cost option for quick everyday meals as supermarkets across Europe continue competing on both price and private-label quality.

Outside food categories, Lidl said its “Cien Hairspray Classic, strong, 3” achieved a “Good” overall rating in the same publication. The retailer highlighted the product’s vegan formulation and pricing position within the category.

The results add to growing competition among European discount retailers to strengthen private-label credibility through independent testing, particularly in frozen foods, household staples, and near-food ranges.

Retailers across Germany have continued expanding own-brand assortments as consumers remain focused on value, affordability, and product quality during ongoing pressure on household spending.

Why it matters

Independent testing results are increasingly becoming part of supermarket private-label strategy across the German supermarket sector.

Discount chains including Lidl are investing heavily in retailer-owned brands to improve margins, strengthen shopper loyalty, and compete directly with national FMCG brands across frozen food, household, and personal care categories.

Strong performance in consumer testing can also support shelf positioning, promotional activity, and long-term private-label growth in European grocery retail.
