Johnson Controls has launched Metasys 16.0, the latest version of its building automation platform, introducing new cybersecurity, resilience and energy management capabilities designed for mission-critical facilities, including supermarkets, food distribution centres and cold storage operations.

The updated platform is designed to help organisations reduce operational disruption, accelerate system deployment and upgrades, and improve visibility across building systems. As grocery retailers continue investing in smarter stores and more efficient operations, building automation is becoming increasingly important for managing refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), lighting and energy consumption.

Metasys 16.0 introduces cybersecurity features aligned with IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2, helping operators strengthen protection for connected building systems while reducing IT complexity. Johnson Controls said its new Fast Track upgrade process can reduce upgrade times by up to 40%, allowing organisations to deploy the latest security and operational improvements more quickly.

The company also introduced built-in system redundancy designed to keep operations running if one server becomes unavailable, eliminating the need for specialised hardware or third-party software to maintain business continuity.

According to Johnson Controls, the latest release can reduce engineering and deployment time by up to 30% through standardised workflows. New visual integration tools, including Node-RED, are designed to speed system integration by as much as 80%, enabling customers to connect building systems and share real-time operational data more efficiently.

The platform also expands operational visibility by bringing together energy consumption, peak load analytics, indoor air quality, emissions monitoring and system performance within a single interface. Johnson Controls said this reduces configuration requirements while limiting dependence on separate third-party tools.

For organisations operating multiple facilities, Metasys 16.0 now supports up to 1,300 IP-connected devices, around 30% more than previous versions, enabling larger building portfolios to be managed without significant system changes.

The release also incorporates air and water control sequences aligned with ASHRAE Guideline 36. Johnson Controls said these enhancements can improve operational consistency while delivering energy savings of up to 30%, depending on building conditions and system configuration.

In addition, the platform includes dashboards designed to support compliance with evolving sustainability and building performance requirements, including readiness for Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) reporting through validated operational data.

As US retail technology continues to evolve, supermarkets and food retailers are investing in connected building management systems to improve energy efficiency, protect refrigeration assets and strengthen operational resilience across stores, warehouses and distribution centres. Building automation platforms are becoming an increasingly important part of modern grocery operations as retailers seek to lower operating costs while maintaining reliable food storage and store performance.

Johnson Controls said Metasys 16.0 is supported by the company’s global manufacturing capabilities, lifecycle services and field workforce, helping customers maintain efficient and reliable building operations as operational and regulatory requirements continue to evolve.
