Australian food inflation accelerated in May, adding fresh pressure on household grocery budgets despite a slight easing in the country’s overall inflation rate.
New data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 4.0% in the 12 months to May 2026, down from 4.2% in April.
However, inflation for food and non-alcoholic beverages increased to 3.3% year on year, up from 2.8% in April, indicating that food prices are once again rising faster than in previous months.
The ABS said higher prices for meals out and takeaway, which climbed 4.0% over the year, were the main contributor to the increase in food inflation.
The latest figures suggest grocery cost pressures remain persistent even as broader inflation begins to moderate.
Housing remained the largest contributor to overall inflation, rising 6.5% over the year, driven by higher electricity, rent and new dwelling costs. Transport inflation also rose 3.3%, although fuel prices continued to decline following the temporary halving of Australia’s fuel excise and lower global oil prices.
For supermarkets and food manufacturers, the renewed increase in food inflation could lead to continued pressure on pricing strategies and consumer spending behaviour.
Australian retailers have spent much of the past two years investing in value campaigns, promotions and private-label products as shoppers increasingly seek lower-cost alternatives amid higher living costs.
The latest inflation data may reinforce those trends, particularly if food prices continue to rise during the second half of the year.
Underlying inflation also remained elevated. The ABS said annual trimmed mean inflation increased to 3.6% in May from 3.4% in April, indicating that broader price pressures across the economy have not fully eased.
