Lidl GB is expanding its Lidl & Go smartphone self-scanning service to 37 additional stores across Scotland, the South East and the South of England after receiving positive customer feedback during an initial seven-store pilot.

The wider rollout will take place throughout July and marks the next phase of Lidl GB’s investment in digital shopping technology designed to make grocery shopping faster and more convenient.

Integrated into the Lidl Plus app, Lidl & Go allows customers to scan products as they shop using their own smartphones. Shoppers can monitor their basket value and savings in real time before completing their purchase at checkout, without the need for dedicated handheld scanning devices.

According to Lidl GB, feedback from the initial trial showed strong interest from customers shopping with children and those who preferred greater flexibility while moving around the store. The retailer said the feature gives shoppers more visibility over their spending during each visit.

The expansion forms part of Lidl GB’s broader digital strategy to enhance the in-store customer experience. Alongside Lidl & Go, the retailer has increased investment in personalised Lidl Plus coupons by 60% this year and introduced Lidl Points, a rewards programme that lets customers earn points and redeem them for discounts and products.

Lidl GB is also continuing to develop additional digital services through its Lidl Plus platform, including Lidl Pay, Click, Reserve & Collect and shopping lists, while maintaining staffed checkouts and traditional payment options across its stores.

The 37 participating stores are located across Scotland and southern England, including Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Inverness, Stirling, Brighton, Basingstoke, Portsmouth, Salisbury, Christchurch, Sevenoaks and East Grinstead, among other locations.

The expansion reflects the growing use of mobile technology by supermarket retailers to simplify shopping, improve customer convenience and strengthen digital loyalty programmes as consumers increasingly expect more flexible in-store experiences.

What happens next?

Lidl GB will continue rolling out the Lidl & Go trial across the selected stores during July while gathering customer feedback to help shape future development of the service and its wider digital shopping platform.

The rollout will also help the retailer assess how customers use self-scanning technology before deciding on any broader expansion across its UK store network.
