Mars, Incorporated and Big Idea Ventures have launched the 2026 Next Generation Pet Food Program in partnership with AAK, Bühler Group, Givaudan, and Ingredion Incorporated, expanding efforts to develop more sustainable pet food ingredients and supply-chain solutions.
The program, now in its third year, is focused on startups developing alternative proteins, fats, oils, and novel low-carbon ingredients for pet nutrition. The 2026 edition will place a stronger emphasis on Asia-Pacific markets as demand for sustainable food innovation continues growing across the region.
Selected startups will receive expert support, potential commercial partnership opportunities, and $15,000 in funding. Companies chosen for the accelerator will also present their technologies at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit in Singapore.
The initiative is designed to connect emerging FoodTech companies with large-scale ingredient suppliers, processing specialists, and global pet food manufacturers. The program is seeking solutions that can help improve ingredient security, sustainability, and supply availability within the pet food sector.
The announcement also reflects wider pressure across the global FMCG and food manufacturing industries to secure more sustainable raw materials and reduce supply-chain emissions. Alternative proteins and ingredient innovation are increasingly becoming part of broader food-system planning, including areas linked to ingredient sourcing and long-term production resilience.
Asia-Pacific is expected to play a larger role in future pet nutrition growth, particularly as regional investment in FoodTech, fermentation, and alternative ingredient manufacturing continues expanding.
Applications for the 2026 program are now open to startups globally, although the initiative said preference will be given to scalable businesses connected to the Asia-Pacific market.
What happens next will depend on how quickly new ingredient technologies can move from pilot-stage development into commercial-scale production. For suppliers and manufacturers, the focus is increasingly shifting toward scalable, lower-carbon ingredient systems that can support both the wider pet food and global FMCG supply chain.
