Twinings has launched a new UK and Ireland brand campaign, “But First, Tea”, positioning tea as an everyday pause before work, travel, exercise and other moments in consumers’ daily routines.
The campaign went live on 2 October and forms part of Twinings’ wider effort to connect its tea portfolio with wellbeing and different drinking occasions throughout the day.
Twinings said the campaign is built around the familiar idea of taking a moment with tea before moving on to whatever comes next, from preparing for a presentation or the school run to meeting friends.
The brand described the campaign as the beginning of its “next chapter” and said it wants to highlight the role tea can play in everyday wellbeing.
That positioning gives Twinings room to market beyond the traditional morning or afternoon tea occasion. The company has increasingly linked its portfolio with functional and wellbeing-led products designed around different consumer needs, including ranges associated with relaxation, sleep, digestion and other lifestyle occasions.
The strategy comes as established tea brands compete for relevance with coffee, energy drinks, functional beverages and other categories that increasingly target specific moments during the day.
Twinings’ campaign therefore focuses less on tea simply as a traditional hot drink and more on the ritual surrounding it. For supermarkets, the approach could support broader merchandising opportunities across standard tea, herbal infusions and wellbeing-focused products.
Twinings is part of Associated British Foods’ grocery portfolio. The brand already features in GTN’s ranking of the UK’s leading FMCG companies, where ABF Grocery is highlighted for its tea and heritage-brand portfolio.
Recent ABF trading updates have also shown differences between markets for Twinings. GTN previously reported that the brand recorded good growth in Australia while sales in the UK and Europe were weaker than expected during part of the year.
That makes renewed brand investment in the UK particularly relevant as Twinings looks to strengthen engagement with shoppers and create additional consumption occasions.
The campaign also arrives as tea manufacturers adjust to changing consumer expectations around wellness, convenience and product functionality. Younger shoppers in particular are increasingly exposed to drinks marketed around energy, hydration, relaxation, gut health and other functional benefits.
Twinings’ existing portfolio gives it scope to participate in that shift without moving away from its core tea identity.
The company said the new campaign is intended to celebrate the short pause tea can provide before consumers move into the next part of their day.
For grocery retailers, the commercial question will be whether that positioning can translate into stronger frequency across tea and infusion categories rather than simply shifting demand between existing products.
Twinings has not disclosed a sales target or investment figure connected with the campaign.
The launch nevertheless adds another marketing push behind one of ABF Grocery’s most established brands as tea suppliers look for new ways to maintain relevance in an increasingly crowded beverage market.
