Fujitsu Limited and AEON Food Style Co., Ltd. will begin a field trial in July 2026 of a new AI agent designed to support supermarket store managers with strategic decision-making and daily operations. The trial, taking place in a physical AEON Food Style store, aims to evaluate whether artificial intelligence can improve store planning, speed up decision-making, standardise operations and increase management efficiency amid ongoing labour shortages in the retail sector.
What is an AI store management agent?
An AI store management agent is an artificial intelligence system that assists supermarket managers with operational tasks such as analysing business performance, planning store strategies, creating shelf layouts and assessing local market conditions. Rather than replacing employees, it is designed to provide recommendations that help managers make faster and more consistent decisions.

Why is AEON Food Style testing AI for store management?
AEON Food Style is testing AI to help supermarket managers handle increasingly complex operational responsibilities. The retailer was formed on 1 March 2026 through the integration of MaxValu Kanto, Daiei’s Kanto operations, and AEON Market. The company is looking to improve operational consistency while responding to changing consumer demand and labour shortages.
The AI agents are intended to reduce reliance on individual experience by providing structured recommendations for key management decisions.
How will the AI support supermarket managers?
The field trial focuses on two main operational areas.
The first AI agent assists with store strategy formulation, analysing business conditions using the 3C framework and helping managers develop medium- and long-term store plans. Fujitsu and AEON Food Style will assess whether the technology reduces planning time and supports the training of newly appointed store managers.
The second AI agent supports shelf allocation and sales floor layout planning. Using headquarters’ merchandising instructions, product information and individual store characteristics, the system generates shelf plans and visual layouts to improve communication with store teams and simplify implementation.
How was the AI developed?
Fujitsu’s Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) and design teams worked with AEON Food Style to analyse common store management tasks across the retailer’s newly integrated businesses.
Within approximately 10 days, the teams developed four AI agent prototypes covering store strategy, shelf planning, feasibility studies and trade area analysis. Two of these prototypes have been selected for the initial field trial.
Why does this matter for the retail industry?
Retailers worldwide continue to face labour shortages, rising operating costs and growing pressure to improve productivity without reducing customer service.
AI is increasingly being applied beyond customer-facing applications to support operational decision-making inside stores. Store planning, merchandising and workforce support are emerging as key areas where retailers are testing artificial intelligence to improve consistency and efficiency across multiple locations.
The AEON Food Style trial reflects a broader trend of supermarkets investing in AI-powered operational tools that complement human expertise rather than replace store managers.
What happens next?
The field trial will run during July 2026, with Fujitsu and AEON Food Style evaluating the AI’s impact on store management, merchandising and operational efficiency. Based on the results, Fujitsu plans to improve the technology, expand its capabilities and explore additional AI agents that can support sales growth and other retail management functions across the supermarket sector.
