Ahold Delhaize USA is expanding its partnership with NCR Voyix to modernise checkout and other in-store technology across its US grocery businesses. New point-of-sale technology is already available in 100 stores, marking the first announced milestone in a rollout expected to continue over several years.

The programme covers point-of-sale (POS), self-checkout, pharmacy and fuel operations. It aims to create a more consistent technology foundation while allowing each of the company’s regional supermarket brands to adapt services to local customer needs.

Ahold Delhaize USA operates five major grocery brands: Food Lion, Stop & Shop, Giant Food, The GIANT Company and Hannaford. Together, the businesses operate more than 2,000 supermarkets across the eastern United States.

The expanded agreement builds on the companies’ existing relationship and uses the Voyix Commerce Platform to support store operations. Ahold Delhaize USA has not disclosed the contract’s value, the locations of the first 100 stores or a firm date for completing the network-wide rollout.

Ann Dozier, chief information officer at Ahold Delhaize USA, said the company’s technology strategy is focused on making shopping easier for customers and helping associates serve them more effectively.

“Our goal is to create a more consistent technology foundation and a more connected experience, while maintaining the flexibility that allows each of our local brands to meet its customers’ needs in the short term and positions us for the future,” Dozier said.

She confirmed that the rollout is underway and new point-of-sale technology is available in 100 stores, with further deployment planned over the next several years.

The four parts of the programme are closely connected but perform different tasks. POS technology processes purchases at staffed checkouts. Self-checkout systems allow shoppers to scan and pay independently. Pharmacy technology supports in-store pharmacy operations. Fuel technology serves associated fuel retail operations.

NCR Voyix chief executive James G. Kelly said the multi-year programme reflects how retailers are looking for systems that simplify store operations while leaving room to introduce new services. The announcement does not say that every location has all four services or that each store will receive the same combination of upgrades. The initial figure of 100 stores refers specifically to availability of the new POS technology.

For a retailer operating five regional chains, a common technology base can reduce the complexity of maintaining separate store systems. The company says it also wants to preserve the flexibility that lets the individual brands meet different customer expectations.

The scale of Ahold Delhaize USA makes the investment important for the US grocery technology market. Ahold Delhaize’s 2025 annual reporting recorded 2,017 US stores at year-end, including 1,110 Food Lion stores, 362 Stop & Shop stores, 194 operated by The GIANT Company, 188 Hannaford stores and 163 Giant Food stores.

Ahold Delhaize USA says its five US grocery brands serve 26 million omnichannel customers each week. The modernisation therefore has the potential to affect a large number of daily shopping transactions, although the company has not quantified projected speed improvements or cost savings.

The rollout follows other investments in digital infrastructure. In 2025, Ahold Delhaize USA completed deployment of its proprietary online grocery platform across all five US brands, with Hannaford joining after Food Lion, Giant Food, The GIANT Company and Stop & Shop.

The business has also introduced its Edge retail media advertising platform and brought digital, data and technology teams together into a unified organisation. The NCR Voyix agreement brings the next phase of that strategy into physical stores.

Checkout modernisation is a broader theme in American grocery retail. NCR Voyix has also announced a separate agreement with Stater Bros. Markets to introduce its POS and connected technology across 165 supermarkets in Southern California.

On Grocery Trade News, earlier coverage of NCR Voyix’s TruAge integration examined its technology for convenience and fuel retailers. Our US supermarket technology company overview places point-of-sale and automation suppliers in the wider retail market.

The next measurable step will be the expansion beyond the first 100 sites. Ahold Delhaize USA has not provided a store-by-store schedule, but says deployment will continue over the next several years.

Editor’s Note: This announcement moves Ahold Delhaize USA’s digital transformation from e-commerce infrastructure into core store operations. The first 100 POS installations provide a tangible milestone, but the total investment, deployment schedule and measurable customer benefits have not been disclosed.
