Mondelēz International has agreed to acquire a majority stake in US snack maker Undercover Snacks, adding a fast-growing quinoa-crisp business to its portfolio as food groups compete for shoppers seeking alternatives to conventional confectionery.
The investment was disclosed by Mondelēz on 29 October 2026 and announced by Undercover on 30 October. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to customary conditions including regulatory approval. The companies have not disclosed a purchase price.
Undercover makes chocolate-covered and frosted quinoa crisps and is available in more than 25,000 retail locations. Its products have also been supplied to United Airlines, which has distributed more than 175 million units since 2023. Airline distribution is a significant trial channel, although it should not be confused with grocery retail sales.
The business will continue to operate independently within Mondelēz’s North America Ventures unit. Diana Levy will remain chief executive, and Michael Levy will continue in an operational leadership role. The founders will retain a significant minority holding and board representation.
For supermarket buyers, the main question is what access to Mondelēz’s distribution, procurement and retailer relationships could mean for Undercover’s listing opportunities. Greater scale may help a niche snack brand reach more stores, but a broader rollout does not guarantee repeat purchases or additional category sales.
The transaction also shows the appeal of snack formats that bridge confectionery and better-for-you products. Buyers will need to assess the brand’s actual ingredient composition, allergen information, pack prices and shopper response rather than treating marketing positioning as a nutritional endorsement.
Major snack suppliers increasingly use investments and acquisitions to enter growing subcategories without relying entirely on established chocolate and biscuit ranges. This may intensify competition for shelf space against emerging independent brands and supermarket own-label alternatives.
GTN has previously covered Mondelēz among suppliers in its European snack companies overview and discussed wider branded FMCG competition in its US FMCG brands analysis.
Completion in early 2027 and any subsequent expansion of retail distribution will be the key developments for grocery buyers to watch.
Editor’s Note: Based on the Undercover Snacks announcement dated 30 October and Mondelēz’s regulatory disclosure on 29 October 2026. GTN analysis focuses on supermarket distribution and category competition; no transaction value was disclosed.
