LÜBECK, Germany — EDEKA Jens has opened a new supermarket in Lübeck-Buntekuh, expanding its retail network to 12 stores across northern Germany. The new store, located on Korvettenstraße, welcomed customers on June 11 following a construction period of just under a year.

The modern supermarket offers around 1,950 square metres of retail space and employs 45 people, including two trainees. According to the company, the store was designed to combine fresh food retailing, regional sourcing, modern technology and sustainability features in a single location.

A key focus of the new market is fresh food. Customers can choose from around 20,000 products, including fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, sausage and cheese specialties, as well as fish products prepared in an on-site smokehouse. Additional fresh food offerings include a salad bar, freshly squeezed juice station, antipasti selection and sushi products.

Regional sourcing plays an important role in the assortment. Products from suppliers across the region include asparagus, coffee, strawberries, apples, potatoes and honey sourced from local producers in northern Germany.

Modern technology and sustainability features

The new supermarket incorporates several technologies designed to improve efficiency and reduce energy consumption. These include LED lighting, heat recovery systems, heat pump technology, glazed refrigerated display cases and a photovoltaic system for on-site electricity generation.

Customers also have access to four traditional checkouts, four self-checkout stations, customer Wi-Fi and Smart Shopper solutions. Electric vehicle charging infrastructure is planned for the site, with four charging stations expected to be installed by the end of the year and additional expansion planned.

The store also features a bakery, foodservice offerings and seating areas designed to encourage customers to spend more time on-site.

EDEKA Jens said the new Lübeck-Buntekuh location reflects its continued focus on freshness, customer service and regional partnerships while supporting local charitable initiatives through bottle deposit donation programmes.

With the latest opening, EDEKA Jens now operates 12 supermarkets along Germany’s Baltic coast region.

German supermarket operators continue to invest in modern store formats that combine fresh food, local sourcing, sustainability initiatives and digital retail technology. The new EDEKA Jens location reflects broader trends across the German supermarket sector as retailers seek to enhance the customer experience while improving operational efficiency.
