German supermarket group EDEKA has detailed an 11-product premium private-label range developed with chef Johann Lafer, as retailers prepare for Christmas grocery demand.
In an announcement dated 28 October 2026, the Hamburg-based retailer outlined the EDEKA Herzstücke Lafer Selection, which includes five meat and vegetable stocks, four chocolate-covered biscuit confections and two coffee blends.
The partnership was first introduced on 26 October, with products beginning to reach store shelves during the month. The 28 October release adds detail about the range and plans to expand it next year. It is therefore a follow-up, not a newly signed agreement.
Lafer, the German chef known for his restaurant and television work, is involved in reviewing the recipes. EDEKA says products must receive his personal approval before carrying the Lafer Selection designation.
The launch is significant for supermarket buyers because it shows how retailers are extending own-label ranges beyond everyday value products. Prepared stocks, speciality chocolates and coffee give shoppers opportunities to trade up in categories connected with festive meals and gifts.
Chef endorsements are not in themselves evidence of higher sales or superior products. The commercial test will be whether shoppers accept the positioning, return for repeat purchases and see a clear difference from existing premium labels and national brands.
EDEKA says more Lafer Selection products are planned for Easter 2027, with further additions later that year. It has not disclosed an overall sales target for the new range in the announcement.
For suppliers, the range also illustrates the role of formulation, ingredient standards, packaging and consistent quality when retailers develop higher-value private-label lines.
GTN has previously covered EDEKA’s wider position in its German supermarket market analysis and the competitive picture in German private-label grocery.
The next milestone is the planned Easter expansion, which will indicate how far EDEKA intends to take this chef-backed proposition beyond the seasonal launch.
