Sainsbury’s Opens New Stores on Former Homebase Sites

Sainsburys has started opening a set of new supermarkets across the UK after taking over ten former Homebase locations. The sites were acquired over the past year, and each one is being converted and opened in stages as planning work is completed.

The first store to open was in Lowestoft. It is the retailer’s first supermarket in the town and brings around 60,000 people within a short drive of a Sainsbury’s store. It also includes an in-store Argos, which is now standard for many of the chain’s larger formats.

New stores in Cromer and Bromsgrove have also opened. More locations across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland will follow as the refurbishments finish.

Sainsbury’s sits as the UK’s second-largest supermarket, with more than 1,400 stores nationwide. These new openings help the retailer reach areas where it previously had limited presence and give shoppers more access to larger-format sites.

New stores also mean more work for the wider supply base, something we covered in our supermarket suppliers UK 2025 overview.

Each of the converted stores is opening gradually, depending on planning approvals and local development timelines. The company expects the full set of ten sites to be completed over the coming months.
