Rijk Zwaan is pushing high-resistance tomato genetics further into mainstream commercial supply programmes as growers and retailers look for ways to reduce disruption from Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV).
The Dutch vegetable seed specialist says its Rugose Defense portfolio is designed to combine high resistance to ToBRFV with the yield, flavour, colour, firmness and shelf-life standards required by commercial growers and retail customers. The issue is increasingly relevant for supermarket tomato programmes because virus pressure can reduce marketable yield, affect fruit quality and force short-notice replacement sourcing.
Rijk Zwaan’s latest material points to a shift from purely defensive disease management towards supply continuity. The company says high-resistance varieties are being tested under practical growing conditions and in commercial programmes, with further releases planned across its global breeding pipeline.
The retail relevance is already visible. Rijk Zwaan says its ToBRFV-resistant mini-plum truss variety Anizalla RZ is being grown commercially for sale in Germany and the UK, while its wider Rugose Defense range covers several tomato segments, including cherry, cocktail, mini-plum, standard and vine types.
That matters because tomatoes are one of the most operationally sensitive fresh-produce categories for retailers. Buyers need consistent volumes, uniform grading, colour, firmness, shelf life and taste across fixed promotional and seasonal programmes. When disease pressure cuts production, the impact can move quickly from the greenhouse to supermarket availability.

Rijk Zwaan has previously estimated that ToBRFV has spread widely across Mediterranean production areas. The company has said the virus can reduce both quality and commercial production per square metre, while one Dutch grower using Rugose Defense reported that previous infections had caused around 20% production losses and significant extra costs.
For buyers, those losses matter in several ways. Reduced marketable yield can leave contracted programmes short of volume. Quality defects can increase rejection rates. Replacement sourcing can push buyers into different origins or specifications, while packers may have to manage inconsistent sizing, colour or shelf life.
Rijk Zwaan’s argument is that resistance at variety level can reduce that volatility before it reaches the retail chain. The company says its high-resistance varieties have remained healthy in trials under strong infection pressure while susceptible varieties in the same conditions showed clear symptoms and lower marketable yield.
Resistance does not remove the need for hygiene. Rijk Zwaan continues to stress that resistant genetics should be combined with clean crop starts, strict greenhouse hygiene and careful handling because ToBRFV can spread mechanically through workers, tools, equipment, plant material and production environments.
The competitive challenge is therefore not simply to produce a resistant tomato. Growers still need varieties that satisfy retailer specifications. Rijk Zwaan says breeders have focused on combining ToBRFV resistance with production performance, flavour, visual appeal and shelf life, rather than treating resistance as a standalone trait.
That distinction is important for supermarket buyers. A variety that protects yield but fails on flavour, presentation or post-harvest performance is unlikely to secure a lasting place in premium or long-term retail programmes.
The UK market gives the strategy added relevance. Rijk Zwaan’s UK assortment already includes multiple Rugose Defense varieties with high resistance to ToBRFV, including cocktail, cherry and vine types. The company is also continuing to expand resistant material suitable for different production systems and markets.
For retailers, the next stage will be commercial rather than technical: how quickly resistant varieties move from trials into larger contracted programmes, how they perform across different origins and seasons, and whether they materially reduce the supply shocks associated with ToBRFV.
If adoption continues, disease resistance could become a more visible part of fresh-produce procurement decisions alongside price, origin, specification, flavour and shelf life. For tomato buyers, that would make plant genetics an increasingly important part of supply-chain risk management rather than something confined to the grower.
