Lidl has invested €2.3m in expanding and modernising its supermarket on Calle Hermanos García Noblejas in Madrid, adding more than 230m² of selling space ahead of its reopening on Friday, 18 September.
The 1,540m² store has 27 employees, a total workforce figure rather than a count of new jobs.
The 17 September announcement adds the Madrid-specific investment and expansion figures to the previously disclosed reopening plan.
Madrid forms part of a September programme worth more than €10m that also includes Barcelona and Carballo in Galicia. However, these are not three additions to Lidl’s store count: Barcelona is a new location, while Madrid and Carballo are modernised existing supermarkets.
That distinction matters when suppliers assess a retailer’s growth plans. A refurbishment can increase selling capacity within an established catchment, but it does not create an entirely new route to market.
In its 9 September expansion update, Lidl outlined approximately 50 Spanish store projects for the financial year ending 28 February 2027. Around 40 are intended to be new stores, with the remainder involving upgrades or expansions.
The retailer says it buys €427m of products annually from more than 80 suppliers in the Madrid region. Those figures describe its existing regional procurement scale; they are not additional purchasing commitments associated with this refurbishment.
For manufacturers, the useful follow-up is whether the extra space changes range allocations, replenishment volumes or delivery requirements. Floor area alone cannot establish any of those outcomes, and should not be treated as a forecast of incremental supplier sales.
The investment follows Lidl Spain’s July launch of Lidl Points, adding a physical-store development to the retailer’s recent customer-retention activity.
It also gives buyers monitoring Spain’s domestic supermarket groups a concrete competitor benchmark: spending on an established outlet, rather than expansion measured solely through new addresses.
The next test will be how the enlarged store performs after reopening. For suppliers, confirmed changes in orders and shelf allocations will be more informative than the refurbishment budget alone.
